Hello from Dionne ~ here's my first 'brick'

Hi Everyone, I'm Dionne. I have been quilting for 16 years and my biggest love is piecework and quilting. But this year I'm trying new things, so I just may try my hand at applique! I live in the Pacific Northwest (Seattle area) and have a blog of my own (Sew Many Quilts) I am pretty jazzed about this challenge!

It all actually started out as my son bringing me scraps from my 'crumbs' canister. This is a canister I keep of pieces too small to cut into a scrap, but too big to throw away.

So My little guy (currently five years old) rummages through this cannister, while I have it out and bring bits to me. He tells me he wants this bit or that one to be in his quilt. Usually I just smile and nod then put the bits back. He started getting wise right around the time Rachel came up with this great challenge. AND I love Pat's technique!
So I am taking each of the pieces, picked out by my little guy, and then sew them together until they make a long enough strip. Each strip becomes a day, and then I make a brick for him. We plan to make a brick every week. I don't know how it will turn out, because this project is being directed by a five year old boy. However, here is the brick we came up with after our first week on this project!

The added bonus for me is that he took an abandoned ( and never to be claimed) UFO and asked if that could be the back of his quilt! Yahoo! A new project and a UFO all combined into one!

Oh!!! I love the mental image of your little helper - how lucky :) My father tells a story of how he helped his mother pick fabrics from under the table. Scraps were in his truck and handed up from under the table cloth :) I love that story...have to coax it out of him again and see how he embellishes it these days ;)

I've seen UFO on several blogs. I'm new to blogging and somewhat to quilting. Can someone tell me what that means?

Oh my gosh!! I love that!!

That makes this challenge all the more special!

Where in Seattle area do you live? Wait...have we had this convo before? Are you from LS?
I grew up in Marysville.

UFO- unfinished...something...I haven't figured that part out yet.

Sorry for my cryptic ways!
UFO stands for Un-Finished Object.

Really it's just a project that you started and then never finished.

Lots of people use other acronyms that they like (PIPs - Projects in Process, WIPs - Works in Process, etc) but UFO seems to have stuck universally.
Cheers,
Dionne

How cute! What a very handy helper you have there!

As to UFO's, now that I know what they are, I am afraid I have quite a few of them myself. =( LOL
